Sukhoi Fighter Jet Crashes in Nashik and Pilots Evacuate Safely

A Sukhoi fighter plane that belongs to the Indian Air Force (IAF) was destroyed in a field close to Shirasgaon village in Nashik, Maharashtra today. The pilot and copilot were able to exit safely, and be suffering only minor bruises.

The plane was in testing after having been revamped in the hands of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) in the event of an accident. The images from the scene reveal an ash cloud rising from the wreckage, and fires burning through the twin engine jet. Security personnel and police are on the scene for medical help and protect the area.

Safe Ejection System

The Su-30MKI is renowned for its innovative ejection mechanism that is it’s Zero-zero NPP Zvezda K-36DM, which lets pilots escape in low speeds or at low altitude. This vital safety function likely was a key factor in ensuring safety of the pilots ejecting. The process of ejection is comprised of explosive charges, canopy elimination and deployment of parachute, which exposes pilots to high-g forces which can result in injuries.

The mainstay of the IAF:

The Su-30MKI is the core of the IAF and has over 200 operational aircraft in various squadrons. This formidable fighter jet is in operation for nearly two decades and has seen numerous upgrades including the MKI, which is the most recent version.
